Hey, there!
Welcome to my very own Garbage Collection!Who am I
I'm Gabriel Costa! I'm 31, I'm right-handed and I'm not very good with introductions. I'm a software engineer with over 9 years of experience, I'm crazy curious, and I really like designing data-intensive applications (wink), software monitoring, and the fun challenges that come with scale.
I'm most proficient with Python and JS/TS, but I've been really enjoying Rust, Go and Elixir lately, so I've been favoring them whenever it makes sense to. There'll be a section here to talk more about the tech I like soon enough.
On my spare time, I play the guitar, work on some side projects, and on weekdays I religiously lose copious amounts of money by trading options and futures on the stock market. I have fun doing it, so it's fine. I have fun doing it, so it's fine. I have fun doing it, so it's fine.
Some useless trivia
I can pinpoint every country of the planet in less than 5 minutes.
Yes, the video is longer than 5 minutes. I'm an entertainer. Sue me.I can type at 110wpm (~550cpm).
(on a good day)I'm the record owner of the Rio de Janeiro map on Geoguessr.
Hopefully that will still be the case by the time you check.About the blog
I used to write on Medium many years ago, and as you'll soon find out, I like writing about math. I made heavy use of LaTeX, but Medium didn't support it, so I had to screenshot the equations from a website that did. That wasn't very dark-mode friendly, so I decided to look for a a platform that supported it out of the box.
Once I was no longer bound by the confines of the Medium realm, I continued going after more customization options. Wordpress would've been a good fit, but I really wanted to implement an achievements system, and maybe most importantly, I didn't want to disgrace my ancestors by writing PHP.
In the end, I decided to just build it from scratch, by using coding and algorithms: I really like Remix, so I used that with Tailwind, and hosted it on Cloudflare Pages (because it's free). There's a bunch of other stuff in the mix too, but I'll get into the nitty-gritty in a post soon enough.
Anyway, thank you for taking the time to click around! If you're unsure of where to go next, click here to go to a "random" post.
